Synthetic diamonds, man against nature?



The discovery in 1793 of its composition, of pure carbon, by Antoine Lavoisier, marked the beginning of the epopee of its synthesis.

A known synthetic diamond also under the commercial name “Cultured Diamonds“ or diamond of culture (synthetic diamond). This term is interdict in France according to French regulation. A synthetic diamond is the reproduction of a natural diamond, creates by the man, in laboratory, it has primarily the same chemical composition, the same crystalline structure as well as the same physical properties and optics that a natural diamond which it copies. Other invaluable stones thus produced are available on the international market, such, the synthetic rubies, synthetic sapphires and synthetic emeralds.

In France the regular commercial practice for such diamonds obliges the salesmen to use the “synthetic” term, so as not to mislead the customer.

In this category of diamonds one finds synthetic diamonds of industrial use, intended exclusively for the industrial applications such, polishing, cutting with the laser or the size of a diamond, etc…
The second category are synthetic diamonds of jewellery, one estimates that the production used in jewellery would not exceed a few hundreds of million carats per year of rough diamonds what would represent approximately 50.000 carats, however it is a market into full change and currently in strong progression.

Just like the market of the natural diamond of natural colour or the natural diamond of colour treated, synthetic diamond that it is coloured or colourless its own market.

Historical synthetic diamonds



It is in 1955, that the company General Electric announced that it succeeded in producing synthetic diamonds of industrial quality. In the years 1970, synthetic diamonds of gems quality, of more than one carat, are produced by General Electric. DeBeers announced, the same year, that it had succeeded with to produce synthetic diamonds of quality gemmates on a purely experimental basis.

In 1985, the Japanese company Sumitomo Electric Industries announced the synthetic diamond marketing of gems quality. To date the synthetic diamonds under marketed by American companies. It is estimated that today the production of synthetic diamonds used in jewellery does not exceed a few thousands of carats per annum. One finds rather yellows going to five carats, but also from colourless which do not exceed 0,50 ct.

Art. 4: The following qualifiers respectively supplement the denomination of the matters and products mentioned below:

“Synthetic” for the stones which are crystallized or recristallized products whose manufacture caused completely or partially by the man was obtained by various processes, whatever they are, and whose physical properties, chemical and of which the crystalline structure corresponds essentially to those of the natural stones that they copy.
Use of the terms: “raised”, “cultured”, “of culture ", “truth”, “invaluable”, “fine”, “true”, “natural” is interdict to indicate the products enumerated with the present Article.
